Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of Ziegfeld Follies personality, Fanny Brice shortly before, during and after World War I and chronicles her rise from being an delicate, unattractive, stage-struck teenager to national stardom. Her tale begins with her young days in New York's Lower East Side, where the teenager fluffs her way through burlesque and vaudeville, wishing to make it big despite the discouragement of her friends and family, who tell her she isn't star material enough for the stage. It also covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed marriage to Nick Arnstein, a charming, sophisticated man whose allure Fanny finds irresistible. The theater production is full of the awe-inspiring music that anyone would come to expect from a show of this quality and included are several show-stopping numbers such as "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".
