BACKGROUND

In 1975, the Broadway production of the Wiz premiered in New York after two successful tryout runs in Detroit and Philadelphia. The musical celebrates African American culture, spearheading an all-soul, hip-hop and R&B musical – a retelling of the most celebrated fantasy story, Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical went on tour in 1976 and was later turned into an epic film with the same title. During the 80s, The Wiz was given a mind blowing revival followed by another US tour. THE CREATIVE TEAM AND CAST

This 2025, the production returns as a groundbreaking revival. The production features direction by Drama League Award winner Schele Williams with choreography by Jaquel Knight and additional book by Amber Ruffin. The score from the original musical is maintained with music and lyrics majority from the late multi Tony Award winning composer Charlie Smalls. The musical also features incredible work from music arrangment, supervision, and orchestration from Joseph Joubert.

Meanwhile, the touring cast comprises a stellar team of outstanding performers including Dana Cimone as Dorothy, Alan Mingo Jr. as The Wiz, Sheherazade as Glinda, D. Jerome as Tin Man, Elijah Amad Lewis as Scarecrow, and Cal Mitchell as Lion.

ACCOLADES

The original Broadway production of The Wiz was an overwhelming commercial success. For starters, the musical bagged almost all of the Tony Awards it was nominated for. In 1975, the Wiz won seven out of eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, The Wiz took home the award for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Choreography and three other awards. After its spectacular Broadway revival in 2024, the new production of The Wiz scored two Theatre World Awards, two Chita Rivera nominations, while the score was nominated for Best Musical Theatre Album at the Grammy Awards.

THE REVIEWS

The Broadway revival had great reception among Broadway’s elite. For starters, the musical reimagined is a brilliant take on the original epic from the 70s. “Hip-hop moves provide the production’s most electrifying moments, particularly in “The Emerald City” sequence, which also includes soulful steps in the spirit of the ‘70s source material,” wrote Variety. Meanwhile, the New York Theater Guide praised this retelling with plenty of good words. “The Wiz firmly reconnects the disco and Motown sounds that were coming out of other, white-led 1970s shows (like Grease and Thank God It’s Friday) back to their Black roots.”

The Theaterly gave great compliments to the revival’s magnificent cast. “The real riches are in the cast’s connection to each other, and to the material.” The writer continued, “Its young leads, as well as their more experienced counterparts, are having the time of their lives and making the most of their roles, singing with an infectious joy typically missing from oft-retread properties.”
