Shucked

“Shucked’s relentless one-liners make for a rip-roaring good time.”

A corn-obsessed show based in the fictional town of Cob County, surrounded by towering walls of… yup, corn. But trouble is brewing, the maize is dying, and they’re all about to get shucked… the only way to save the town is to bring in the a-maize-ing “corn doctor.” Enter our heroine, Maizy, desperate to get the town back on its feet, mostly so she can get hitched and be put on her back! So, off to the bright lights of Tampa she goes, to track down Gordy, the elusive “corn doctor,” and get this mess all straightened out so she can get home for a good ol’ shucking. Except Gordy isn’t a “corn doctor” as such, more like he’s a podiatrist and a con man, and he sees the perfect mark… It’s a show that weaves themes of love, community, and breaking down barriers through a barrage of corn puns, heartfelt ballads, and upbeat country tunes like “Corn,” “Independently Owned,” and “Maybe Love.”

Shucked has a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission. It is recommended for ages 10+ and contains adult themes, language, corny innuendo, dad jokes, and absurdity, appealing to fans of lighthearted fare.

“Shucked is a corny delight, bursting with laughs and catchy tunes!”

‘Shucked’ review: Broadway’s best and funniest new musical

By Johnny Oleksinski for the New York Post

“Color me “Shucked” – sorry, shocked.

For I have finally seen the new musical that popped open Tuesday night at the Nederlander Theatre. The one that has been inundating strangers in subway stations for months with ubiquitous yellow corn cob posters as if it’s trying to be Broadway’s answer to “Shen Yun” or “Dan Smith Will Teach You Guitar.” The Southern comfort show, with a tuneful country score by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally and a superb book by Robert Horn, is just so damn funny.

If any of the outrageous yokel characters open their mouths to do anything but sing, 99% of the time they will deliver a winning joke or pun. The receptive audience sits in a state of perpetual giggle, with heads bobbing up and down like buoys. An example of the sense of humor: A scamp named Peanut (Kevin Cahoon, brilliant) is a walking Poor Richard’s Almanac who colorfully announces his unhinged, universal truths as we howl back. “I think if you have time to jump in front of a bullet for someone,” he says to the group, “they have time to move.”

But what is “Shucked”? The premise is as zany as the zingers. The musical, at once traditional and cool, is set in fictional Corn Cob County, a small-town Southern oasis surrounded by corn that’s as high as an elephant’s eye. But when their all-sustaining crop starts to die (we actually watch the plant wither like a cheesy old Disneyland ride), spunky Maizy (Caroline Innerbichler) sets out to the “big city” to find a hero to save the corn.

“Shucked” is not the only new show on Broadway with laughs, but it is the only unapologetic comedy in the field. There are no “but”s here. “Such-and-such musical is hilarious but preachy.” Or “Whatsitcalled is funny but makes you think about your own mortality.” All you think about at “Shucked” is what a terrific time you’re having. Nothing corny about that.”

The Cast and Creative

“Shucked serves up corny humor with a side of stellar performances.”

The tour cast includes Danielle Wade (Mean Girls & The Wizard of Oz) as Maizy, Quinn VanAntwerp reprising his Broadway role as Gordy, Jake Odmark (Pretty Woman, Spider-Man, and Kinky Boots) as Beau, Miki Abraham as Lulu, Mike Nappi as Peanut, Maya Lagerstam as Storyteller 1, and Tyler Joseph Ellis as Storyteller 2.

Shucked has a book by Tony Award winner Robert Horn (Tootsie), and music and lyrics are by Grammy Award winners Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally. It is directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Coast of Utopia), has choreography by Sarah O’Gleby, and scenic design by Tony winner Scott Pask (Dear Evan Hansen). The costume design is by Tilly Grimes, lighting by 5-time Tony nominee Japhy Weideman, and sound design by Tony nominee John Shivers.

The musical took home just 1 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, earned by Alex Newell as Lulu, becoming the first openly non-binary performer to win in an acting category. The show earned 9 Tony nominations in total, including Best Musical, Original Score, and Book.

“Pure, unpretentious fun with a harvest of clever wordplay.”

Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis

Designed in the Beaux Arts style and opening back in 1921 as the Hennepin Theatre, it was the largest vaudeville house in the country. In the 30s and 40s it became a cinema, screening Gone with the Wind for a staggering 3 weeks of sold-out shows. And over the years it has seen various productions like My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof and films like The Godfather in 1972. The theater was briefly owned by Bob Dylan and his brother David Zimmerman in the 80s. Now seating just a smidge over 2500 guests, and after a $10 million revamp in the 90s to expand the stage by nearly 20 feet, it can now accommodate the biggest Broadway shows and has hosted pre-Broadway premieres of Disney’s The Lion King and Victor/Victoria.

The Orpheum features wheelchair-accessible designated seating areas on the main floor, and hearing assistance devices are available. Located at 910 Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, the Orpheum Theatre is near numerous parking ramps located within the Hennepin Theatre District.
