Seen by many as “the perfect musical,” My Fair Lady has been charming audiences since it first swept onto the Broadway stage in 1956. At the time, it set a record for the longest run of any show on Broadway! The musical is based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion”, featuring a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, and music by Frederick Loewe. Today, it is regarded by many as one of the Best Broadway Musicals of the Golden Age for it’s excellent writing, flawless characterisation, unforgettable music, and perfect narrative, displaying a delicate mastery of the balance of sweetness and sadness.

The story follows that of Eliza Doolittle, a flower girl with a thick Cockney accent who enlists the help of phoneticist Henry Higgins, in order to pass as a lady, a challenge he accepts as part of a bet with his friend, Colonel Pickering. The modern story, while paying homage to the 1956 original, shifts the narrative from one where Higgins sculpts Eliza into the perfect vision of aristocracy to one where Eliza seeks out her own path in the world, and it is shown to be as much her determination and tenacity that pay off in the end as Henry Higgins’ skill as a tutor. This also results in a shift in tone – the original outlined the way rigid societal structures of class and gender can limit individuals, whereas the revival is more positive, focusing on Eliza’s unique grit and determination, which eventually helps her to triumph over at least some of the obstacle presented by her “crass” upbringing and position in society.

But shifts in emphasis and characterization aren’t quite enough by themselves – there are a few extra touches needed to bring the classic 50s musical up to date. That’s where the skills of set designer Michael Yeargan, costume design Catherine Zuber, and lighting designer Donald Holder come into play. While some revivals in the past couldn’t quite lift the backdrop surrounding the characters into a modern era, the most recent reincarnation does so beautifully, with lush portrayals of every location from Higgin’s home to aristocratic dwellings, while the aisles of the theater are artfully designed to offer a view across the rooftops of London. Combine all this with the exceptional work of choreographer Christopher Gattelli, and the actor’s performance and song is meshed with a visual spectacle to create one truly extraordinary production.

And what songs! As well as being memorable, My Fair Lady is an example of a musical where the music really serves to tell the story. “Just You Wait, ’enry ’iggins” will have you rooting for Eliza’s success, while “I Could Have Danced All Night,” will have your heart racing with the same excitement shown by the characters.
