Stephen Schwartz & Winnie Holzman, producers of Wicked, were inspired by the 1995 Gregory Maguire story "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".
This musical has been hailed for its detailed backstory of Oz, gifting The Wizard of Oz fans around the world a look into Glinda and Elphaba (also known as the Wicked Witch of the West). Wicked, even with its main characters starting off as enemies, it's a powerful tale about acceptance and friendship. With an incredible costume creation and jaw-dropping special effects, WICKED transports its audience straight to the wonderful land of Oz!
The production originally premiered in 2003, making it 21 years old. Since its debut, Wicked has surpassed $1 BILLION in revenue on Broadway. Only The Phantom of the Opera & The Lion King have accomplished this remarkable achievement. Wicked has also toured theaters outside of Broadway, with records in Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Miami, and London.
