Les Miserables at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel prepared the very first play script for Les Misérables (originally in French). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the identical name, Les Misérables was modified into a live stage adaptation as a fully sung-through show, which was monumental in that era.

Following an initial showing in France, there was obviously a growing demand to create a more accessible adaptation, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he fully committed and agreed to create an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the translated songs. The English version of Les Mis initially premiered with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its astounding success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the show rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a significantly more premier venue, and remained there for 19 years. The musical then transferred once more to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until present day. If you include all its productions since its inception all those years ago, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is statistically the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With 37 years in West End alone and not even listing its shows in international cities, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that Les Mis continues to be incredible in the viewpoint of the musical’s audiences. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality due to the apparent emotion beneath the surface of each character and act performed. Les Mis has become so famous that the play has been converted to films repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on a separate medium.
